📐 Setting Up Product Dimensions (L x W x H)

Shopify only allows you to store product weight, not dimensions—which can cause issues when calculating accurate shipping rates

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Shopify only allows you to store product weight, not dimensions—which can cause issues when calculating accurate shipping rates, especially with carriers that use cubic weight (also known as volumetric weight).

That’s where Pack to the Future comes in. Our app lets you easily add product dimensions in bulk to improve rate accuracy and packaging suggestions.

🚫 The Problem: Missing Dimensions in Shopify

When your products only have weight but no length, width, or height:

  • Shipping rates at checkout may be underestimated or overestimated

  • Carriers may charge you more based on cubic weight

  • Package fit suggestions may be inaccurate

  • You could be using larger mailers than necessary (costing you extra)

✅ The Solution: Add Dimensions in Pack to the Future

You can add or update product dimensions directly in the app:

To get started:

  1. Go to Settings > Product Dimensions

  2. You’ll see a list of your products, pulled from Shopify

  3. Enter the Length (L), Width (W), and Height (H) for each product

  4. Use the bulk editor to quickly apply sizes to multiple products at once

📝 Measurements can be entered in cm or mm, depending on your store settings.

🧠 Why It Matters

Many carriers charge based on whichever is greater: physical weight or cubic weight.
By adding dimensions, you:

  • Get more accurate shipping rates in your checkout

  • Let the app suggest better-fitting packaging

  • Avoid carrier surcharges or return-to-sender issues

💡 Tips

  • Use a tape measure or digital caliper for accuracy

  • If products vary slightly (e.g. clothing sizes), use the dimensions of the largest size

  • Don’t forget to update dimensions if your packaging or product changes
