📦 Assigning Default Packages to Products

To make fulfilment even faster, Pack to the Future lets you assign a default package (like a mailer bag or custom carton) to each product.

To make fulfilment even faster, Pack to the Future lets you assign a default package (like a mailer bag or custom carton) to each product. That way, we can automatically calculate the best packaging and carrier rates—without you lifting a finger.

🪄 Why assign default packaging?

If your products typically ship in specific mailers, boxes, or cartons:

  • You can assign that package once

  • The app will auto-calculate the best packaging based on total order volume

  • You’ll spend less time guessing and adjusting on the fly

This leads to:

  • Better shipping accuracy at checkout

  • Lower packaging costs

  • Fewer split shipments or wasted space

📦 How to assign default packages

  1. Go to Settings > Product Dimensions & Packaging in the app

  2. Select a product from the list

  3. Click Assign Default Package

  4. Choose one of your existing package types (e.g. “Small Compostable Mailer” or “Large Carton”)

  5. Save

🧠 You can always override this at the order level if needed.

📐 How packaging is auto-calculated

When a customer places an order:

  • The app adds up the cubic volume of each item

  • It checks for assigned default packages

  • It selects the best-fit package from your available options

This ensures:

  • You’re not overpaying for unused space

  • Your labels and rates match your actual parcels
